Responsible Wildlife Tourism

Preserving the Sanctuary of the Asiatic Lion

Gir National Park & Wildlife Sanctuary is the last remaining wild refuge for the endangered Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo persica). When entering this 1,412 sq km protected ecosystem, visitors are guests in the natural territory of wild carnivores, herbivores, and over 300 avian species.

The Gujarat Forest Department enforces strict statutory wildlife conservation regulations under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Adhering to these guidelines ensures your personal safety, enhances wildlife viewing opportunities, and protects fragile forest habitats.

Safari DO'S (Best Practices)

  • Carry Original Photo ID: Every traveler must carry the physical original ID (Aadhaar, Passport, Voter ID, Driving License) submitted during permit booking.
  • Wear Earth-Toned Clothing: Dress in muted shades of khaki, olive green, brown, tan, or beige that blend harmoniously into the dry teak canopy.
  • Follow Your Guide's Instructions: Always heed the guidance of your assigned Gujarat Forest Department naturalist regarding positioning and animal behavior.
  • Maintain Complete Silence: Keep noise levels to an absolute minimum when observing lions, leopards, or feeding deer to avoid startling them.
  • Report 30 Minutes Early: Arrive at Sinh Sadan Safari Gate at least 30 minutes prior to departure for mandatory physical verification.
  • Remain Seated in the Gypsy: Stay seated in your allocated forward-facing seat throughout the entire 3-hour journey for your personal safety.
  • Bring Essential Optics: Carry binoculars and telephoto camera lenses (100–400mm+) to observe wildlife clearly from permitted distances.

Safari DON'TS (Strictly Prohibited)

  • Never Alight from Vehicle: Stepping out of the Gypsy vehicle inside the core sanctuary is strictly prohibited and carries legal penalties.
  • No Camera Flash or Drones: Flash photography blinds animals and is banned. Drone cameras and quadcopters are completely forbidden by forest law.
  • No Feeding or Teasing Wildlife: Never offer food, make clapping noises, or attempt to provoke animals into action. Feeding wild animals is illegal.
  • No Smoking or Flammables: Carrying matchsticks, lighters, cigarettes, or smoking inside the dry teak deciduous forest is punishable by law.
  • No Bright / Fluorescent Clothes: Avoid wearing bright red, neon yellow, pure white, or flashy patterned clothing that alarms wildlife.
  • No Plastic Littering: Discarding single-use plastic bottles, wrappers, or polythene bags inside the park is strictly forbidden. Carry all waste back.
  • No Loud Music or Horns: Playing music on portable speakers, loud mobile ringtones, and unnecessary vehicle horn blowing are prohibited.

Key Rules by Category

1. Dress Code & Footwear:

Opt for lightweight, breathable cotton fabrics in natural camouflage colors. Avoid strong perfumes, colognes, or deodorants that wild predators can smell from great distances. Comfortable closed walking shoes or sneakers are recommended.

2. Photography Regulations:

DSLR/mirrorless cameras require official camera receipts (₹200 for domestic / ₹1,600 for foreign). Mobile phone photography is free. Keep limbs and camera equipment inside the Gypsy frame. Flash, drones, and selfie sticks are strictly banned.

3. Children & Senior Safety:

Ensure children remain seated between adults and do not stand on vehicle seats while the Gypsy is in motion. Elderly guests should utilize cushioned middle seating. Keep water bottles handy to stay hydrated throughout the 3-hour game drive.

Statutory Legal Penalties:

Gir National Park is a legally protected wildlife sanctuary. Violations of forest regulations—such as alighting from vehicles, flying drones, littering plastics, smoking, or harassing wildlife—are punishable offenses under the Wildlife Protection Act with heavy statutory fines, confiscation of equipment, and legal prosecution by forest authorities.
